B Working with images

Image galleries

If you or your students are adding multiple images per post, you should download the Contact Sheet plug-in (or similar image management plugin). There are a host of stylesheets that you can drop in to adjust the placement and shape of thumbnails. Contact Sheet with the default Charrette styling appears below. You can control the size of the thumbnails, medium sized image and large image (lightbox size) in the Settings>Media area. If you’ve already uploaded images, you can use the “Regenerate Thumbnails” tool to make more thumbnails.

Single images

If you are dropping in single images, insert images from the Add Media button or insert using HTML code.

Make an image the maximum width by using the classname “fullwidth” in an image tag.

Good for password, admin or general non-curriculum sort of moments.

Avatars are used along with nicknames to identify users of the site. Students need to only set up a Gravatar once and it follows them around whenever they register with the same email address. Students may add multiple email addresses and avatars.

Avatars are cropped into a circle on the site, but should be uploaded as a rectangle.

Go to http://gravatar.com/ to sign up.

  1. John says:

I’d suggest having students add the gravatars on the first day of class. If keeping a student’s identity private is important, avatars may be abstract or of a favorite object, and the nickname something that won’t appear in a Google search or be identified immediately with the student.

Any post that doesn’t match a magic category will display in this blog/extended form.

Excerpt here

Add an absence by authoring a post in the "Absence" tab

Admin users (the instructor and TA) may add posts to the Custom Post Type called Absences. Adding a post with the author name of the student, the date he/she was absent, titling it with the reason, and categorizing as late or excused (if appropriate), will generate a record for the absence.

You may view the absence on the student’s author page when logged in.

Screen Shot 2013-08-28 at 9.14.08 PMThe instructor or teaching assistant should use the Assignments category to allow students to easily find the assignments on the home page. Posts assigned to Homework or Assignment will also appear underneath the Assignments tab on the home page.

Assignments as a parent category is also magical because any categories within it will display their posts in streamlined fashion. Categories within Assignments are understood to be student work, uploaded to fulfill an assignment.

In the case of this post, this is an assignment, and it fits within the Magic categories unit within the semester.

B Overview of “Magic” categories

Screen Shot 2013-08-28 at 9.00.19 PMCharrette displays posts a certain way based on the category name that you choose. There are certain category names that are in the templates and will make your template act a certain way. You’ll see an example of each one of these within the Magic Categories category on this website. A screen grab of how an optimized list of your categories should look.
